Why Your Self-Effort Isn’t Working (and What to Do About It)
This blog post is based on the full message from Hebrews 10. Watch or Listen here.

There are two kinds of people reading this:
- Those who are sure they’ve avoided the trap of self-effort.
- Those who don’t even realize they’re caught in it.
Okay, maybe three… - Those who’ve been set free, and are hoping to find words here worth sharing.
Whichever one you are read prayerfully. Pause honestly. And if the Spirit leads, pass it along.
We live in a world of endless attempts. Attempts to fix what’s broken, quiet what’s loud, and cover what’s shameful. But for all our striving, many of us are exhausted and still wondering: Why don’t I feel clean? Why does the guilt still whisper?
Hebrews 10:1–4 gives us a sobering diagnosis:
“It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” (Hebrews 10:4)
The original audience knew what that meant. Every year, every sacrifice, every drop of blood was a reminder not of peace but of guilt. These God-ordained rituals weren’t wrong, but they were never meant to be the cure. They were signposts. Shadows. A calendar marked with “not yet.”
But here’s the hard truth for us today: though we no longer offer bulls or goats, we often bring our own modern sacrifices to the altar. Good behavior. Spiritual checklists. Moral performance. Emotional self-medication. We double down on our effort, hoping this time we’ll feel clean.
But shadows don’t save, and self-effort doesn’t justify.
Your greatest need isn’t a fresh start. It’s not a little more strength. It’s not even relief from guilt or shame. Your greatest need is to be made right with God. That kind of righteousness cannot be achieved. It must be received.
Jesus Christ did what no sacrifice ever could. He lived the perfect life you couldn’t, died the death you deserved, and rose to offer full cleansing and complete justification. When He stretched out His arms on the cross, He left nothing undone. He reached all the way across your sin and shame to justify you fully.
So stop reaching for the shadow, and turn toward the substance – Jesus.
Let go of your striving by confessing where you’ve tried to clean yourself up. Turn from your own efforts and name the ways you’ve looked for peace in your performance or routines. Open the Scriptures and hear again the good news that Christ has done what the law never could. Worship not to earn grace, but because you have already received it. And come to the altar with full assurance that He is enough.

Three Things to Pray Today: A Heart Check
- Pray for a Cleansed Conscience
Ask God to reveal any area where you are still carrying guilt, shame, or fear that Jesus has already paid for. Invite the Spirit to bring assurance through the finished work of Christ. - Pray for Freedom from Self-Effort
Confess where you’ve been trying to earn God’s approval through performance, routines, or emotional self-reliance. Ask for grace to rest in Christ’s sufficiency. - Pray for Renewed Awe of the Gospel
Ask the Lord to soften your heart again to the wonder of the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus. Pray for fresh joy and peace that comes from knowing you are fully justified.
Three Things to Do in Your Quiet Time Today: A Devotional Practice
- Reflect and Write
Journal honestly: In what ways do I still strive to feel “clean”? What personal sacrifices do I make, hoping they’ll bring peace? What would it look like to let go of that and cling to Christ instead? - Read and Meditate
Slowly read Hebrews 10:1–4 and Psalm 103:10–14. Highlight or write down every phrase that shows God’s mercy, the futility of self-effort, and the sufficiency of Christ. - Remember and Worship
Set aside a few minutes to remember what Christ has done. Whether through music, written praise, or silent worship, focus on Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice. Let your heart respond in awe his humility instead of more effort.
