Am I Enough?

Blog· Thoughts · 3 minute read

(Originally published July, 2018)

You are enough!

Right?

It’s a worldly answer to the aching heart’s question. It offers encouragement when you feel worn down by the expectations of the – well, world.
When you feel that you’re not thin enough, smart enough, pretty enough, tidy enough, rich enough – just say it and believe it, “I’m enough!” and …Voila! Now, you’re enough!

But is it true?

Does it matter if it’s not? Isn’t it just a great thing to believe and an even greater thing to be able to say? Because, no one wants to think they can’t do it, or be it, or endure it, or take care of it.

Who would be that friend who’d actually tell someone they couldn’t do it, be it, endure it, or take care of it? Don’t we all just want to hear “You got this. You’re enough!” when we’re feeling overwhelmed and discouraged?

But if the truth matters – then, maybe we can rethink what we say when we try to encourage someone. And maybe we can speak the truth even if it doesn’t feel like the kinds of encouraging things we’re used to saying, let alone hearing.

So, here’s the Good News/Bad News…

The truth: You’re not enough.
You can’t just put on the right lipstick and suddenly become “enough” any more than you can just put on an “I’m Enough” t-shirt and suddenly become enough.

No lipstick, mantra, or mindset can make us “enough”—only Christ can. Instead of striving to measure up, rest in His perfect sufficiency.

The “I am enough” statement is comforting, but, it’s a lie, and the sad thing is it’s not even a new lie. It’s as old as the garden when Satan convinced Eve that she’d be enough if only she’d take that bite.

Stop putting the world’s solutions on to be enough.
You’ll never be enough…but in Christ, He’ll be your enough.
That’s the message of the gospel.

“I came that you might have life and have it abundantly” – I came. I’m enough. Take my enough and wear that! That’s the greatest good news and it’s what Jesus has to offer!

Admit that you’re not enough…but you have the once and for all sacrifice of the one who was enough and is enough and will be enough covering you!

“When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
If you are in Christ, you are enough – only because there nothing you could have done to be more. What you needed was only made possible if Christ took care of things…and He did. Once and for all.
By the way, these are the kinds of true friends you need in your life and this is the kind of true friend you need to be – the kind of friend who knows exactly Who is enough and exactly why it’s better than fake good news and being comforted with a lie. You’re not enough. I’m not either. What a relief.
He. Is.
